The Pori Sinfonietta chamber concert at Raatihuone will feature Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 3, which moved even the composer himself to tears

The Palmgren Quartet will perform Shostakovich’s dramatic and rarely performed String Quartet No. 3, which moved even the composer himself to tears. Concert will also feature four pieces by Finnish composer Selim Palmgren. He originally composed them for piano and violin and they have been arranged for string quartet by Ion Buinovschi. The concert is organized in collaboration with the Pori Chamber Festival.

The Palmgren Quartet was founded in 2010 and currently consists of three string players from Pori Sinfonietta (Ion Buinovschi, Stefan Kavén, and Béla Bánfalvi) and Sauli Kulmala, who is a violist in Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. The quartet’s concerts have featured the music of Selim Palmgren from the very beginning. Since Palmgren did not compose for string quartet himself, the quartet members have made their own arrangements of his choral works and pieces for violin and piano, among others. In 2023, the Palmgren Quartet released the album Athens Vibrations, on which they play music by Palmgren and the contemporary composer Juha Leinonen from Pori.
